"Alia's Retreat"

from US$35.00

Where did Alia go to recharge her vitality after long days spent being the “Sister of Maud’Dib”, “Alia of the Knife”, or Imperial Regent for Paul’s children? We are shown the stigma of her pre-born status, we are witness to her descent into madness, and we feel her struggle of gaining the approval of her mother without (Jessica) while fighting her within. We are left wondering whether she was ever able to find even a moment of true peace in her short and troubled life.

Alia is, for me and others that I know, emblematic of the horrors of being so tightly locked into a life not of our own choosing. How would we react if the first impressions we left with others was of someone “possessed”? How is a child expected to react to the onslaught of Other Memory when she is still making her own memories? Would we not also grasp for any means of control in our life? Is Alia really so different?

For me, the lesson of Alia is her words as a child, repeated when she took her own life: “I want my brother!” She didn’t want the mantle that had been forced on her; she wanted her brother, Paul Muad’Dib Atreides, to be the focus for Fate.

Own this print as a reminder that you can be the author of your own Fate. You can find new paths to freedom from expectation, rules, and societal pressure. You have the power to make your own memories, and learn to seek wisdom from within on your terms. You can be what Alia was denied.
