"Islands on Caladan"

from US$35.00

I was always a little disappointed that Caladan wasn’t featured more in F. Herbert’s original six volumes of the DUNE saga. Although I understood that Arrakis / Dune (the planet) was very much its own character, I felt part of the story was missing. The addition of new volumes by his son, Brian, and K.J. Anderson have, thankfully, filled in many of those missing details.

Paul, his sister Alia, and his children were very much products of their honing on Arrakis. Paul’s father Leto—who shares his name with Paul’s son, God Emperor Leto II—was very much a product of his home-planet, Caladan. Where Paul had been shaped by “desert power”, his father had been shaped by “sea and air”. Both Paul and his father “lost” their parents (either through death or events) at young ages. Where Paul had to find seclusion amongst the Fremen of Arrakis to survive, his father had to fully embrace his role as Duke of Caladan. Each of them brought the hard lessons learned in childhood to how they ruled as adults.

When I look at “Islands on Caladan” with an objective eye, I am reminded of how my childhood shaped me, how the lessons inform my choices, and how I must always strive to bring the very best forward in how I live my current life.

I invite you to think of this print as a reminder that our childhood never truly leaves us. It is up to each of us to decide which details we bring into our ongoing lives.
